Improvements to I-5 in Tustin and Irvine Coming Soon

To address current and future traffic demand, OCTA is improving I-5 from north of Interstate 405 (I-405) to State Route 55 (SR-55) in the neighboring cities of Irvine and Tustin as part of the I-5 Irvine Tustin Project

Interstate 5 (I-5) is essential to Orange County's mobility, economy and quality of life. Every day more than 275,600 motorists drive this segment of I-5, through the cities of Irvine and Tustin, to reach residential, commercial, educational and employment destinations.

With the final design process nearly complete, the project will be constructed in two segments. One segment will span from approximately Yale Avenue to SR-55. The second segment will focus on the stretch of I-5 from the I-405 to Yale.

Construction is expected to begin in 2026 and end in 2030.

The project will add one regular lane in each direction of the freeway and add new auxiliary lanes between Culver Drive and Jamboree Road in the northbound direction, and between Jeffrey Road and Sand Canyon Avenue in the southbound direction. The project will also restripe carpool lanes so drivers can enter and exit at any point.
