I-5 South Improvements to Temporarily Affect San Juan Capistrano Travel This Weekend

As part of the I-5 South County Improvements Project, on August 19 and 20 southbound traffic will be transitioned onto the new I-5 bridge over Avenida Pico.

From Friday, August 19 to Saturday, August 20, the switch will require significant lane reductions southbound on the I-5 freeway between Avenida Vista Hermosa and Avenida Palizada.

Currently, there are four lanes of southbound traffic in that segment. Beginning at 10 p.m. on August 19, traffic will be reduced to one lane. This will allow sufficient room for crews to work in a tight space, while ensuring the safety of work crews and motorists traveling through the segment.

Two lanes are scheduled to open at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 20, and work is scheduled for completion at noon when southbound traffic is expected to reopen to four lanes on the newly constructed bridge.

Northbound traffic will remain unchanged.

Drivers should be aware that on Coast Highway in Capistrano Beach, OC Public Works will be performing paving work from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20, as part of the Capistrano Surfside Inn Pedestrian Bridge Removal & Crosswalk Installation.
