Work is nearly done on the I-5 South County Improvements Project, a 5.7-mile stretch of freeway that extends from Avenida Pico to San Juan Creek Road. The $230 million project includes widening I-5 to extend the carpool lanes from San Juan Capistrano to San Clemente and reconstruction of the Pico interchange.
At I-5 and PCH/Camino Las Ramblas, crews are wrapping up work on the concrete median barrier. The barrier is being realigned as part of the freeway widening.
Further south, at the I-5/Avenida Pico interchange, crews are within a few months of finishing work. Over the weekend, paving was completed on Pico and the roadway is in its final configuration. The new setup widens and straightens Pico, and provides dual left-turn lanes to northbound and southbound on-ramps to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.
There will be no closures Saturday, Dec. 23, through Monday, Dec. 25, and Saturday, Dec. 30, through Monday, Jan. 1, to make it easier on travelers during the holidays.
The project is expected to finish up with the carpool lanes opening in early 2018.
