May is National Bike Month and Orange County is celebrating in a variety of ways that encourage cycling.
OCTA BikeShare is a great way to get around Fullerton by checking out a bike for quick errands or as the first or last part of a commute. Those who hop on in May can get 20 percent off of an annual membership. That reduces the regular membership from $75 to $60 and the student membership from $45 to $36.
OCTA will join Santa Ana bike fans at Bike to Work Day on May 7. Beginning at 7 a.m. at the Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center, cyclists will bike to city hall at 8 a.m. following a blessing of the bikes ceremony. All are invited to participate in the fun and will have the opportunity to win prizes.
On May 15, participants in the OCTA Bike Rally will saddle up for a 3-mile ride from the Orange Metrolink Station to OCTA headquarters beginning at 7:30 a.m. and ending at 8:45 a.m.
In celebration of Bike to Work Week, those who bring their bikes on board Metrolink on May 15 will ride the train for free.
Three municipalities – Fullerton, Irvine, and San Clemente – will participate in the Ride of Silence on May 21. The Ride of Silence will begin in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways.
Irvine’s Pavilion Park is the place for the Bike Safety Camp on May 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. OCTA will provide bike safety information and special giveaways. Officers from the Irvine Police Department will issue free bicycle license and conduct a Kids’ Safety Rodeo, the bicycle equivalent of a driver’s safety course.
OCTA’s recent Bike Festival at the Huntington Beach Pier attracted more than 1,500 cycling enthusiasts. Following a welcome from OCTA Director and Huntington Beach Mayor Matthew Harper, they visited with vendors of bike-related equipment, learned about OCTA’s Bike Smart. Bike Safe safety campaign, and pledged to ride their bikes during May for a chance to win great prizes. Bikes and baseball were a winning combination Sunday during OCTA’s Angels Game Day Ride when cyclists rode the Santa Ana River bike trail and joined OCTA for a tailgate party.
