Better Bridges Will Lead to Better Mobility in the I-405 Corridor

As part of the I-405 Improvement Project, there are currently nine bridges under construction. That’s about half of the bridges that will be reconstructed as part of the project, which will also build a new connector between the SR-73 and our new toll lanes facility, the 405 Express Lanes.

Here’s one representative sample of how the new bridges will provide increased mobility options for all.

The Goldenwest Street bridge is being rebuilt in two stages, allowing it to remain open to traffic during construction. Traffic is shifted to one side of the bridge so the other side can be demolished and rebuilt. Then the process repeats for the other side.

Once completed, the new Goldenwest Street bridge will be wider and slightly higher to accommodate a wider bridge with eight lanes compared to the previous five. Travelers can look forward to sidewalks on both sides and bike lanes in both directions.

Right now, the major activity on the bridge involves falsework. Falsework is the process of installing timber and steel beams to support construction of the new bridge

This work often requires closures of the bridge and the mainline freeway.
