Zoomars at River Street Ranch is an expansive family-owned and operated petting zoo and activities center in San Juan Capistrano. Run by the Almquist family and their partners, the center features over 100 different types of unusual animals to feed and interact with — from kunekune pigs, guinea pigs, llama, alpaca, sheep, friendly goats, and even a highlander cow. After spending time with the animals, visitors can bring the kids over to the onsite playground, mini train, hay maze, mini excavators, and try their luck at mining for gems.
Onsite manager Monica Hernandez has worked on the family’s ranch for over two years and says they make sure to carry forth the inclusive family-friendly culture of Zoomars Her favorite animal is Lili the llama. “She’s the greatest llama ever. She even gives me kisses,” says Hernandez — who has been impressed with how the local community has continued to rally its support of the ranch during COVID and respect necessary safety protocols.
“I’ve been impressed with everybody’s willingness to cooperate and come together. Everyone is wearing masks. Everyone is playing by the rules and enjoying spending time together and with the animals in a safe way,” says Monica.
With so much wildlife at your fingertips, it’s hard to imagine that Zoomars is within walking distance from the San Juan Capistrano Metrolink station.
