Healthy Ways to Enjoy the Outdoors during COVID-19

Experts agree that maintaining physical and mental health is important, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Just remember to practice safe social distancing and avoid gatherings while out walking and cycling. In addition, please follow the recommendations of state and local health care experts and wear a face covering while out and about.

To minimize the impacts of COVID-19, OC Parks has implemented closures expected to reinforce social distancing and reduce large public gatherings. These measures are in line with recommendations from federal, state and local health agencies. Learn more here.

Here are a few fresh ways for families to get more out their outdoor time:

  • Bird watching is a fun, free way to enjoy the outdoors and you can download free apps to help learn your local feathered friends: CornellLAB has an app for bird identification https://merlin.allaboutbirds.org/the-story/
  • There is always something blooming in Southern California. Use your camera to find out what https://www.plantsnap.com/blog/plantsnap-for-free
  • Everyone is on some type of social network these days, and people who walk and bike are no exception.  Track your activities and share them with your friends on strava.  It’s a great resource for seeing where you walked/rode and where other people are walking and riding.  You can download their free app here: https://www.strava.com/

Always comply with local direction for social distancing and facility closures and be sure to respect those around you. Your consideration helps keep everyone safe.
