Rethink Travel Behavior during Distracted Driver Awareness Month

According to the National Safety Council, distracted driving is a public health issue that affects us all. The latest statistics show motor vehicle fatalities are up 6% from 2015. More than 40,000 people were killed on the nation's roadways last year, and distracted driving is a major contributor.

Cell phones, dashboard infotainment systems, voice command features – all pose a threat to safety. Just one second of your attention is all takes to change a life forever.

Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April is a united effort to recognize and eliminate preventable deaths from distracted driving. It’s also a great time to explore the many ways OCTA can help you stay safe while on the road, from providing safe public transportation in Orange County to teaching drivers about road rules.

OCTA’s 57 bus routes transport riders to a surprising number of destinations for work and play while the well-trained coach operators keep their eyes on the road. It’s a great way to relax, check the phone, or just daydream – without worrying about driving. Explore OC bus here.

Prefer the train? Metrolink passenger rail service is available at 14 stations in Orange County, with connections to Los Angeles, San Diego, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. Try Metrolink for your daily commute or weekend fun trip and enjoy the journey – and let someone else drive. Learn about your Metrolink options here.

To share safety information about driving near cyclists and pedestrians, OCTA created a video and a videogame. It’s a fun way to learn the rules of the road. Play, learn, and win here.

Cars, too, can be a great place to entertain yourself and talk on the phone – as long as you’re not driving. Try a new way to work with OC Vanpool here.
